5 Things to Love About Cape Town, South Africa

I was born and raised in Cape Town, the most beautiful city in South Africa. Call me biased but Cape Town has so much to offer. Because of its diverse and varied activities, Cape Town is the ideal holiday destination. You have the splendor and relaxation associated with nature, the culinary and viticulture delights of the winelands, the mountain and sea for adventure-seekers and the large malls for a shopper’s paradise. There isn’t another city where you can have all of this in a single place.

Here are my 5 things to love about Cape Town:

 1. Day Trips

Cape Town is situated in such a way that day trips are particularly easy to do. You can visit the winelands area over the course of a day or even venture further afield on a weekend trip to the Garden Route. Everything is in easy reach.

Simonstown and Kalk Bay are an hour’s drive away from the city centre and offer incredible views of False Bay and a quaint town atmosphere where you can browse the shops in tiny streets and enjoy a seafood lunch overlooking the ocean. In fact, my favourite way to explore False Bay is by vintage train that departs Cape Town central and travels on the coastline arriving in Simonstown just in time for a bite to eat.

2. Exquisite Views

Cape Town is the kind of city that no matter where you look there is often an incredible view. The mountain is king pin and together with the exquisite coastline there is never a lack of beautiful scenery.

3. Laid-Back People

Cape Town is certainly not like Johannesburg in terms of a rushed city life. Capetonians like to relax, absorb the sun and drink cocktails while the sun sets. There is no working late nights in Cape Town. And even though Cape Town is a medium-sized city, the way of life is very calming and the focus is on quality of life.

4. Camps Bay is Cooking

Nevermind Miami! Bring on Camps Bay. This beach is the hip and happening place to be. Lined with palm trees and soft white sand, the area is alive long after midnight on weekends. Bring a picnic for lunch on the beach or indulge in some delicious food in one of the many cafes here. Walk up towards the mountain to have a beautiful view overlooking the entire bay.

5. Cafe Culture

Cape Town has a café culture like many cities in Europe. In fact, Cape Town’s sister city is Nice, France and one can definitely see the similarities (especially in the Atlantic Seaboard region in Cape Town). People meet for coffees, cocktails and snacks at all hours of the day and there are many fabulous and unique cafes across the city and on almost every corner.
