5 Top Wine Farms to Keep Winter Chills at Bay

One of my favourite things about winter is visiting wine farms in the Western Cape. Of course they’re not as beautiful as in the summer but there is something magical about spending an overcast Saturday afternoon at a cozy farm next to a fireside, sipping on a glass of Syrah and sampling fresh goats cheese.

This is one of the most phenomenal wine farms in the Western Cape. Established in the 1700’s this breathtaking estate is nestled in the Hottentots Holland Valley with incredible views of the Helderberg Mountains. In fact, Lourensford has been popular with many of Hollywood’s actors and actresses and the farm has been the setting for many film shoots too. It’s an exquisite venue come rain or shine.

Asara is a world-class wine farm, half an hour away from Cape Town International Airport and an hour away from the city centre. The wine farm offers a relaxing atmosphere, old-world charm and a breathtaking rolling landscape. Taste delicious South African wines on the deck if the sun is out while overlooking the beautiful lake and luscious setting. Alternatively, stay indoors and take in the cozy, homely feel of the tasting room.

3.    Val du Charron, Wellington

Val du Charron in Wellington is the ideal escape should you wish to go further afield. The wine farm has an ultra-modern restaurant with glass doors overlooking an exquisite blue sky and the Groenberg Mountain. And in winter you can sit on comfy couches next to the large fireplace, sip your wine and even play board games. There is often entertainment in the form of jazz musicians. La Motte is an exquisite, large wine farm situated in the beautiful Franschhoek Valley. The furnishings in La Motte are top-notch and so too is the wine and its presentation. The large indoor tasting area and restaurant accommodates many people and if you desire a wine farm with more of a vibe in winter then La Motte should be top of your list. La Motte also has numerous walks and hiking trails should the weather be good. Suggest you do the later prior to your tasting!
